What else should i put in my slideshow for diabetes?

I already have the basics, but I could use a little help because when we go back to health we are going to be talking about diabetes because I think it is a very important topic that all teens should know about, be aware of, and know how to use the insulin pump just in case one of their friends or family members has it. Thanks for your help. Please no stupid short answers either please!

For people with diabetes, too much glucose in the blood can cause serious foot complications.

Perhaps teaching people how to use an insulin pump would not be the best use of your (or their) time, since someone without diabetes will need to know very little about insulin pumps. That said, you could fit insulin pumps into a more general talk about how insulin can be delivered — talk about it along with regular injections, the pen, the pill (if you’re going over Type-II) and transplants.

Here is a list of things to consider talking about:

    - Causes: Unknown, but there are some hypotheses

    - Symptoms: There are many things to talk about here, but something that is often confused is weight, so definitely hit on the differences between Type-I and Type-II with this

    - Diagnosis

    - Treatment: Blood sugar testing, frequency and location of testing, normal results, insulin types and maybe dosages, ways to deliver insulin, endocrinologist visits, frequency of visits, HbA1c testing and results, causes, symptoms and treatment of high blood sugars, causes, symptoms and treatment of low blood sugars, including snacks, glucose tabs, glucose gel and glucagon (also D50 via IV for those who can administer IVs and who have access to D50)

    - Complications

    - Prognosis

    - Lifestyle: Diabetics have to be aware of the high and low symptoms, should always carry a test machine, glucose and, if they’re on shots, insulin, needles and alcohol swabs, traveling with diabetes, including airports, effects of certain foods and alcohol on diabetics, importance and effects of exercise, importance of testing before driving or doing other potentially dangerous activities

The most important point should be cause and prevention. The medical system in the United States is focused on treatment rather than prevention. There is very little support for people who want to change their lifestyle. The most important information about the cause of diabetes is obscured by disinformation from special interests with tons of money to spend on education, research, and advertising.

Dr. Neal Barnard has suggested that Type I diabetes may be linked to the consumption of dairy products. His efforts have been neutralized by industry money. Type II diabetes can be prevented and in many cases reversed by changing diet and lifestyle. A low-fat vegetarian diet can allow many patients to reduce or eliminate their consumption of medication. (Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. McDougal, Dr. Neal Barnard)

Research money is almost all spent on treatment rather than prevention.
